Default FLHX Gear Shift Linkage

I don't get it. It says "easy install"

I picked up the slotted gear shift linkage from Zanottis. I took off the old linkage, measured up the new one to the same size and expected to be done in a few minutes. When I go to put the new one on the tranny side, itfits fine. But, the other sidethat connects to the foot controls in frontcomes in contact with the front jug installing according to the directions. According to the directions, the linkage goes in front of the tranny shift rod and BEHIND the foot control rod.

What am I missing?

I bolted mine on the front side on both ends. No problems.

I tried that to see, just seems like it is at a weird angle. Stock was straight on though.

I have searched and searched and am not coming up with anythingfor this problem. Is that what everyone elsehas ended up doing? Putting it to the outside?

I just put on Kuryakyn extruded linkage. I had to mount it on the outside as well because of contact with the front jug. The ball joint is beefier on the aftermarket ones. I don't mind the looks though, and shifting is smoother with the new part.

Not slotted but flamed, goes the same on the outside. Didn't ready the instructions so I didn't know I was wrong. Turns out I was right.

I know this thread is a little older but I wanted to post my "Fix" I bought the HD Skull linkage and it would not work on the front or backside as it hit the fins either way I mounted it. I ended up putting a rag over the vertical shifter lever and used a crescent wrench to slightly bend it outward. I was then able to mount it either way without contact to the fins. The flex in the shifter lever is not noticable whatsoever.
