Default Clutch cable lube

This will hopefully not be nominated for dumb question of the year, but here goes:

I've read in some threads where some clutch cables are no longer lubed.

I have a 2011 Road King with stock clutch cable.

- Should I lube the clutch cable or is it one that does not need to be lubed??
- How would I tell the difference as far aif the cable needs to be lubed or not?

Thanks

Good question! I suspect your bike will have a later type cable that doesn't need to be lubed. I only rarely did the cable on my 1990 bike, that I bought new!

as of 2009 service manual the clutch lever pivot and the cable are lubed at service intervals of each 5000 miles.

cable sheaths these days tend to be lined with a teflon type plastic coating which makes the cable less likely to bind.
if the cable housing moves when the cable is pulled, then it is binding inside

I lube it anyway, It slides real easy afterwards so that tells me it needed it. Teflon coating, that sounds like a setup for a cable failure.

My 04 has never been lubricated and it has 45K+ on them. My thought is it's like the pins in a lock, better off left alone. If mine was to get tight, I am sure it would be due to the cable wearing thru the inner sheath and I would just replace it. It calls for it in my service manual however. I replaced the lever since it looked like crap and the aluminum slot it rides in was worn. Not sure if lube would have stopped that and it really does not hurt anything. The sleeve pin bushing appears plastic and surely is no more then a few dollars. Hardly worth the trouble for preventive maintenance.

the dealers dont lube your brake and clutch pivot pin. Ha. Dont care what the check list says. I pulled both pins and they were dryer than dry. I lubed them with some waterproof grease. Nice and smooth now.

Agreed. Don't 100 % believe EVERYTHING the mother ship tells you.
