One of the many reasons how MoCo got it right with the EVO platform. The bearing support for the mainshaft high gear...1996 EVO w/ caged roller bearings, 1978-1/2 Shovelhead w/ caged needle bearings, 1949 Panhead that takes loose needle bearings (makes assembly so much fun especially when using a new high speed case race that you get to size to fit). And the EVO bearing itself is easily 30-40% larger than that used on earlier bikes.

Couple steps forward and one step back...

Pulley back on the bike after installing a new main drive gear seal and quad seal

Inner primary is back on after installing new jackshaft oil seal and mainshaft innder primary oil seal

The plan was/ is to upgrade to an All ***** starter

First thing I found out is that there is a slight difference in the length of the output shaft between OEM & All ***** (OEM on the left; All ***** on the right). Basdically 1/64". I can live with that.

Then came time to see how the coupler fit (again OEM on the left & All ***** on the right). The coupling will not slide all the way on to the All ***** Starter end shaft

Next step, thinking that possibly the splines on the coupling might be a bit rough, I pulled the internal clip, cleaned everything really well, took a small file to the grooves and carefully ran a file along the edges in order to eliminate any burrs that may have come along in 20+ years of EVO life. Still will not fit. I also measured the depth to the resting point of the clip and it measure 9/64" so it should fit.

So I am thinking the splines near the inside of the end shaft are not cut correctly because the coupling should bottom out against the face of the casing. Filing the splines is an option but obviously one that would void any warranty.

Starter is brand new never run and purchased from Dennis Kirk (really like their service and delivery). Unless I send it back I see no point in contacting Dennis Kirk.

My thought is to contact All ***** to see what they might say. That said I can't find any customer service contact information on their site.

Suggestions? Ideas? Feedback? Am I on the right path here?

Swap out the pinion shaft Dave. Put the OEM shaft in the All ***** starter and you'll be good to go. Make sure you don't lose that ball bearing that goes into the shaft behind the solenoid plunger return spring.

Thanks... and I think you may have solved something for me..that ball bearing. I'll post up some pics and look at the parts manual. Think I have it (purly by accident).

The ball bearing fits in the hole in the pinion shaft (not the drive end with the 10-32 threads for the coupler screw) and sometimes falls out when the starter is disassembled. Verify that it's there when you reassemble the starter and don't add an extra ball bearing.

Install the coupler on both shafts then take a measurement front the mounting face of the starter to the end of the coupler.. Is there a deference then??

Install the starter and see how close the pinion is to the ring gear, here's the instructions from a Rivera-Primo 10-82 ring and gear install.

After reading aboout the lowering kit in gonemads post, I found myself to going out to double check to make sure I did not have that set up. Rizzo's friend was lucky.

Was gonna take some pics but then realized I already taken a couple after adding the Progressive 412 shocks.
