Pulled the covers and double checked the pushrods and they seem right. They can rotate freely but have no play at all. Next check will be the compensator nut. I just haven't pulled the primary cover yet...
Yup, that's how you do it. Spin the lifter rollers carefully and also look for signs of the hardening flaking off......look at your cam lobes too as they can wear over high mileages. My standard cam had done 68,000 miles and the hardening was starting to go.
Just had an exhorbitant increase in "exhaust" noise appear last night on my 95 FLHT. D1gger did you ever discover what exactly the problem was? Since it was so sudden I am hoping to find it tot be exhaust gaskets this weekend, but I'm assuming I'll have to hunt further.

First... buy a $ 10.00 stethascope from any auto.parts shop and determine where the noise is coming from.
Second... i am a little concerned about the " tight spot " you noticed while you were checking the lifter rollers ., it probably has no bearing on your current noise problem but i suspect that the rollers are in need of replacement as tight spots should not be there.
You have done your share of wrenching here for sure and i hope we all can help you fix this Bitch of a problem.
Try to determine what area of the motor the noise is coming from , what type of noise you think it is and any other info. you can provide .
