Don't understand why the MoCo would put a standered round o ring on there instead of an x or square ring.
seems to me this is an area where pressure is high enough to justify a more durable application.
On the piston squitrs... I the o ring is rolled, you may be loosing the pressure necessary for oil to reach to the top of the engine.
Not a wrencher here, but sounds logical to me
On the oil pump scavenge ring. I would suspect that finding an x ring in Viton would be hard. Also the way it's used, it needs some compression to hold it in place.. Also it during assembly, a stiffer O ring is needed to keep the pump spigot centered in the hole. I suspect that X rings work better in lower compression locations. Early TC pumps the spigot was as cast. The stated to machine them some time around 2001. The O ring fit is tight and needs some lube, My bet that it was missed.
If the cooling jets were loose, that would be the main contributor.. I agree about less oil to the top end but with it sumping, and it blowing oil our the breathers, there was plenty.. They should have checked rocker bearings/ shafts and pushrod ball ends tho..
Well, I'm at 6000 miles now and I think it's eating oil somewhere. I did the 5K service at 5022 miles. I put exactly 4.2 qts in and the dipstick was reading right at 8/10s full when hot on jiffy stand.
After today's ride its reading just a hair below 6/10s full when hot on jiffy stand.
I added 7 ozs and it brought it back up to 8/10s.
I'm using Mobil 1 vtwin 20w50. There are no leaks or drips on the garage floor and the exhaust doesn't smoke.
I took the air filter out and sure enough there's been some oil in there thru the breathers but not very much. There was some oil film on the inside of the throttle body but not a full drop to be seen.
So, is it normal to lose/use/burn 7 ozs of oil in a thousand miles?
I would say not. My 2006 1200XL Sporty only uses a couple of ounces between 5000 mile oil changes. The M8, one would think, should be better than my 11 year old bike in this regard.
My old sporty never burned any.
my wifes sporty neither and stays cleaner longer.
Big twins do a job on oil. The M8 uses many passages where oil can stay in and not drain into the sump.
I for one would keep the tank only at half fool when hot and not more.
Not a big issue.
Oil pressure sensor failed while on vacation. 4000 miles pulled into Pigeon Forge HD .
They took in in the shop right away tested it , replaced sensor . I signed warranty paper work and back on the road.
