Default Rider's Backrest Removal?

I just bought a 2010 FLHTK and it has the stock seat with standard backrest installed. I am having some issues with my tailbone so I thought I would try it without the backrest, and if that doesn't help, change the seat.

Problem I am having is that the backrest is not a quick-release one. I don't have any instructions on it and getting my hand into that little slit between the front and rear seats in almost impossible.

Can anyone tell me how to remove it? Do I need to take the seat off first? Thanks in advance for all your help.

the adjustable has the lever on the leftside heat shield by your thigh...I don't know how that works...

if yours is the non-adjustable, you just squeeze the 2 vertical supports together- the **** come out of the round holes... and you pull straight up

the "gold" part mounts on top of the rear fender, the black brace attaches just behind the battery.

you can see that there are 4 mounting positions fore and aft and 3 heights for the backrest...the backrest itself has an adjustment for the backrest angle ( allen key)

I have found that when you squeeze the bars together..to kinda push one side in and walk it up the adjustment holes.. I have never been able to get it to pull straight out... I think you need to be a magician to be able to do that...lol

+1 on that! In addition, I cannot get the damned spring to stay put -keeps falling out. I went back to the dealer twice and they gave me a new spring for free. Must be operator error....but for the life of me I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

The Mustang back rest is a much nicer design. I miss it!
