I wanted the finned look for my derby cover but HD wanted $40 + for theirs. I purchased a rattle can of wrinkle paint from the local auto parts store and had some 1/8” stripping tape. After sanding the surface I laid strips of tape out about 3/8” apart, top to bottom on the cover (make sure one of the bolt holes is at the top and perpendicular to your strips)
Attachment 100043

I applied two heavy coats of paint (as per instructions) and let it dry for 24 hours. After removing the tape here’s the finished product.

1) Take a metal type coat-hanger and straighten the wire

2) Fold the two end towards each other and close the eye tight using pliers or a hammer

3)Bend the eye about 45° and solder both wires together to strengthen the tool

4) Cover the handle part using duct tape

5) Fold a piece of steel-wool together, slide it in the eye and apply a few drips of aluminum polish

6) Now you will be able to get access to every part of your spokes

7) Use a piece of cloth to finish the polish

8) You can also use an old tooth brush which is extended by using a piece of PVC pipe (as used to cover electrical wires)

You're bloody brilliant. Now just change that steel wool to an SOS pad and it will be perfect. The SOS pad leaves a film that keeps the rust away for a considerable time. I have to run now. I have a tool I have to make. :-)

Polishing all this aluminum is a pretty big job.

Mud:

Did you strip the powdercoat from your whole motor and transmission? The powdercoat seems to match pretty closely the unpolished aluminum ... and where you were stripping and polishing the part of the block where the oil filter goes, I couldn't tell how much of the motor you were stripping ....

I sprayed the top and bottom covers on my springs to do away with some chrome. just taped off the spring and used a similar flat black. same on battery cover.
