Not to mention the bolts, I think I would be looking to buy a better lift.

Its certainly not as elegant, but it allowed me to get the bike up finally. Didnt mean to complicate the mod design thread but it seems you have to go this route when the original jack forks are that narrow... i'll be looking out for a cheap Craftsman on CL!

I have the same sears jack since I got my FXDC in '08. From day 1 I kept using the "twin cam equipped dyna service lift adapter" HD pn 98965-99 $24.95 without any issue.
Even if this mod seems to be a smart one, you should consider the fact that loads work in a completely different way (from push to cut) on the jack's frame and you can't be sure it has been engineered for that.
Dynas are heavy and expensive at the body shop..... I prefer to play by the book about lifting.

There is an inherent risk buit into anything you do. And there are only a few ways to reduce the risks. The best way is to use equipment that is well over rated for the job. Another way is to be knoledgeable and comfortable with the procedures. The safety margin for the "Jack Mod" lies in it's rateing. Even with the modification on the jack, It's still rated to lift well more than the weight of the bikes. And by expanding the lifting platform, you actually increase the stability of the lift. Also, not having to use the lifting blocks is simpler and more comfortable to me.
The only gain from using the blocks is having full capacity of the lifting device. The inherent risk is using the blocks themselves. Most lift manufactures do not recommend using other lifting devices with their lifts. That combined with the narrower lifting platform and extra procedures for lifting the bike makes the lift to risky for me.

I didn't read all 45 pages, but does anyone know if it will still work on the sportster after the modification. I don't think the frame is as long. I have both a dyna and a sportster so if it won't work on the sportster still I guess I'll just have to get the adapter.

If you have a sporty then measure it. The jack after mod is ~19" wide.

Whelp, I went for it. Measured the sporty first and it seemed like it would work. Good news, it totally works on both the sporty and the dyna. Definitely appreciate this thread and this is why I love this forum. Here's a couple pics:

Thanks for the pic 8541hog, I think i have figured why the lift arms hit my jiffy! My Sears jack is only 12 11/16" inches from outside to outside the lift arms instead of the 13 7/16th" in your pics. I didn't get this jack new so I have no idea how old it is. They must have changed the design of the jack since mine was made.

Wonder if I should just get a new jack at this point...

(It was funny that I just mentioned that I was going to get a lift this weekend from Sears (on sale for $99). He said "I have one I don't don't need any more, I'll bring it in for you"
Anyway, I did the mod with no problem (Sawzall with a Bimetal blade make QUICK work of the center bar!).
I have an 08 Fat Bob and have a problem with jack placement. I looked at Vic's pics in post 73 and see where he hits the frame. On mine, if I go immediately behind the oil pan frame guard I run DEAD into the middle of the Jiffy stand. If I move it forward to clear the Jiffy stand (and stop) it is on the pan. Is the FBob frame different? Is there something I may be doing wrong?
I see others that have used this with FBob without complaint.
I can post pics if necessary

BTW I am trying to lift from exhaust side :-)

Thanks

Glad to hear you found the answer, I think if it were me, I would get a new lift and do the mod, not sure I would feel safe adding more spacers than I already have.
